Ooberman’s indie approach and sense of melody first struck a chord with audiences in 1997. Ooberman is a band with a sound that is hard to pin down.
They gained a loyal following for their upbeat blend of indie, folk and progressive rock. Their songs are very diverse in the way they sound; some are fast-paced with a strong beat, and others are much slower and softer.
Despite this diversity, each song still has one thing in common: they all have a unique sound that leaves you wanting to hear more from this band.
British band Ooberman is led by singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and all-around musician Dan Popplewell.
No one would ever accuse Popplewell of being a one-trick pony!
He is perhaps best known as the frontman for Ooberman, but Dan has also released a wealth of solo material under his own name and writes music for films and advertising purposes.
When it comes to the history of Ooberman, the story begins with a piano. Dan Popplewell and Andy Flett met over a piano at their school in Bradford.
The pair of musicians soon hit it off and formed their first band, The Forestry Commission. Andy’s younger brother Steve was the first to join, playing the bass guitar for the band. However, founder Dan Popplewell moved to Liverpool shortly after, and The Forestry Commission dissolved.
Steve Flett had already moved to Liverpool in 1992. However, five years later, his brother Andy decided to follow in Steve’s footsteps and move to the same city.
With all three friends now reunited in Liverpool, that’s when the magic happened. Ooberman was formed! Joined by English singer-songwriter Sophia Churney (keyboards and vocals) and Liverpool based drummer Alan Kelly, the band started making beautiful music together. It didn’t take long for the band to hit it off.
After Ooberman’s first gig in June 1997, their eccentric live shows and quirky demos won them the 1997 BT Merseyside Arts Award for Best Newcomers.
